Pachelbel Canon - Fasch Concerto for trumpet, 2 symphonies

Probably the most known piece of Pachelbel is his canon in Re major.  The version played here is (to me) the better and the final version of it. Im sure if you suffer a wreckage and found yourself lonely in an desser Island, this is the cd you ought to have. But do not push yourself for the Pachelbel's canon, bacause all tracks are super a very delightful, specially the Pachelbel's suites and the Fasch's symphonies.

This is the kind of cd that will remain for posterity without a doubt. I imagine the sons of my sons enjoying this "piece of art".

Enjoy!!!

Christmas Oratorio - Bach

Art spanning Christmas has been very common in Christianity. The depiction of the Jesus birth described in the gospels of St Luke and Matthew are the usual view with some variants that took place over the time, specially in the baroque period tha is when it reached the climax. Even now, the force of the baroque related to christmas is in vogue. The depiction of the love and devotion of Mary to the child Christ, Joseph standing aside, the shepherds, and the three wise men or the magi, Melchior, Gaspar and Balthazar offering gifts in pictures of the most renown baroque masters.

This Oratorio of Bach depicts the Christmas throug Epiphany (6 January). Its music comprises 6 cantatas, three of which are: Hercules auf der Scheidewege BWV 213, Tonet, ihr Pauken Erschaller, Trompeten BWV 214, Preise dein Gluke gesegnetes Sachsen BWV 215. Whose music have been transcribed quite unaltered to the new text for the Oratorio.

Enjoy the most famous christmas oratorio!!!

México Barroco Puebla VII

Among all the liturgical celebrations in the New Spain, Christmas was at the highest point, so, all years a set of Villancicos (carols) were commisioned to the local chapel master with text by the most celebrated writters of the epoque such as Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz.

Padilla, born in Málaga Spain and succesor  of the great portuguese composer Gaspar Fernandez as Puebla's cathedral chapel master in 1629. His villancicos are full of joy, and also contained a many varied spaniard characteristics. One thing that, from my point of view that makes these villancicos so appealling, is the fact that were intended to a many varied audience, including the popular castas, thus, popular music tastes are added.

Enjoy!!! and Merry Chistmas  :)

A Latin American Baroque Christmas

It hasnt been long since latin american baroque music has been dug out, a music that so long had been devalued, but thanks to new studies and the rediscovered new forms of interpretation, we can enjoy once again since the XVIII century.

Music in the "Americas" played a very important role. Maters had commisions for every chrurch festivitie, but, one that comes out over the others is the Nativity. Regarding nativity, no expenses were spared for the chapel masters to make up all sort of carols, anthems, masses, etc.

Christmas Cantatas - Telemann

Telemann always in high steem in his life time due to his music, specially his sacred output, showing a natural talent-like in those affairs.

The two cantatas spanning this album, were intended for the court of  Eisenach as part of a yearly cycle, even though, Telemann by that time (the time when it is supposed the two cantatas were composed, that it is thought was after 1721) was "non resident musical director" of Eisenach's, but continued to receive assignments.

German christmas music in the XVIII century wasn't as nowadays where "happy" carols are the common. In fact, regarding just the aesthetics, what changes is just the text, comparing with church music for other festivities. Very different for example Spain or the New Spain where christmas carols were at first.

Happy listenning and enjoy!!!

Fandango - Scarlatti

Genoveva Galvez, great harpsichordist, performs some spaniard sonatas belonging to to the first half of the XVIII century, some of them rediscovered not so log from the recording date (1984).

When listening this recording. I confirm my love for the harpsichord's sound, and so more delightful with works of  not so reknown composers (except for Scarlatti and Nebra).

If it liked you my last post of 15 Hapsichord sonatas by Scarlatti, no doubt you'll love this one too.

A Baroque Feast - Tafelmusik

With whatever kind of music, there is always a basic repertory, without which, one can't say that is fan of that or whichever music, even though, it's much more remarcable in the so called "classical music" (that in this case is baroque one). Whoever  that is more than 20 and has lived in a city, at least once, I think, have listenned Vivaldi's four seasons, or Handel's fireworks' festival, or one or two Brandenburg concertos of Bach.

The repertory here presented is one of those that mustn't be missed. Who in his five senses would like to miss Handel's the arrival of Queen of Sheba, or the opening of the suite Abdelazar of Purcell, or Marcello's most famous oboe concerto in D, etc.

15 Harpsichord Sonatas - Scarlatti

What would be music like nowadays without Scarlatti Harpsichord's sonatas? No doubt that our overview of music would be changed, perhaps that's the case of Seixas, presumably to have overpassed Scarlatti's musical skills, but who knows, most of his music is lost due to the 1755 Lisbon's earthquake. Some Scarlatti's music was also destroyed in that natural event, but fortunately was retrieve thanks to copies made elsewhere.

Christophe Rousset is one of the leading harpsichordist currently, and here shows us a great versitality playing some very known Scarlati's sonatas.

Though I'm not a fan of French baroque music, and much less for operatic outputs, this is an an extraordinary exception. Rameau's outstanding music, along with the Ex Cathedra's  experince and the so well fitting voive of Carolyn Sampson for baroque repertory lead to a, so to speak, master cd.

La Passione di Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo - Jommelli

Jommelli is without a doubt one of the finest composers between the transition Baroque-Classical. His stile is more classical, for example, he does not use frequently contrapuntal passages. But, his writing in sacred music is very operatic, more or less like verdi in his requiem.

There is a black story about Jommelli and Terradellas, it seems that Jommelli was jealous of him because he was more successful, so, Jommelli killed him. Of course it is just speculation because those rumors appeared about 20 years after Jommelli's death, more or less the case Mozart-Salieri.

Trauer Actus - Telemann

Telemann is the composer that in his life composed more than any other before or after, not only his instrumental repertory is vast, but also his vocal one. In the genre "cantata" he composed around 1500. Here are five of them, very dark and full of melancholy, but with the view of hope and faith.

One point that must be said about Cantus Colln is that they (the ensemble) have their own stile and what we listen is not what Telemann may have intended exactly, but Telemann along Cantus Colln and its leader Konrad Junghanel. But at any rate it's a pleasure listen to them, even though this is not their best album.

La Calisto - Cavalli - René Jacobs

Cavalli's operas set the way in which the genre "opera" would be understood in the next generations during the baroque era.

If you are very attached to the XIX century opera, that is, attached to composers like Donizzeti, Verdi, Bellini, Wagner, etc., you'll find these early operas quite strange and weird. Just have patience and be open mind and you'll find its sense and all its colours.

Well, of the cd's I intend to post, this is an exception since it is not baroque, but belongs to a set called Mexico Barroco/Puebla. Chansons De Tavernes Et De Chapelles-Deller Consort

Songs of taverns and chapels is a cd released in 1979. Once again is shown the genious that is Henry Purcell.
From my point of view the recent baroque releases sounds better, due to to two factors mainly: One is because of this boom pointing to the baroque period (specially in music) that has been developing slowly since Harnoncourt in the 60's  until 90's when it started developing in a way much more complicated and faster. The second reason is the new tecnology for recording and storing the data. Even though, this recording has become a classic.

Latinamerica "classical" music is quite unknown all around the world, and even more unknown is the baroque era, musically speaking. The musicians held in the churches as chapel masters and others post first came from Europe (Spain and Italy mainly), so, the trend in the new compositions was Italianized  music, but with its special touch due to in part because of the musical culture by the natives and also because the new world was quite isolated.

Secular Spanish music in the XVII century. The most popular form of music set for religious feasts was the "villancico" (carols), but they werent constrained to nativity, they were composed by the most prestigious musicians for many celebrations, and the best of all, they were mainly in spanish. This form spread  all over the New World. It comprises a very vast of music and stiles, but many of the scores are lost or incomplete.

The four seasons - Vivaldi

Without  a doubt, the most transcendental Vivaldi's oeuvre, the most known and the most played between all the musics in the world. The four seasons "Who doesnt know them?" - words by Handel and also by the musicologist Adolf Scheibe in 1745.

I've listened like 10 different versions of these Vivaldi's masterpieces, and this one and also the cheapest is to me the best. It cost me like 3 dollars only. This version is in some way orthodox-like, it is similar to many other versions, it is soft and plenty of colors, the main violinist show great virtuosity, and mainly of all, it is balanced, characteristic that differs a lot of those versions of Fabio Viondi and Il Giardino Armonico, whose sense of the tempos seems to me exagerated.

Enjoy by yourself this serie of concertos contained in L'estro armonico e dell'invenzione played by la Capella Istropolitana.

Forgotten Castrato Arias - La Dolce Fiamma

Once again The french Philippe Jaroussky makes an outstanding use of his so prodigious voice. This time bringing to life some Arias of one son of Johann Sebastian Bach, Johann Christian Bach.

This cd isnt properly baroque, in fact it is in more classical with sprinkles of the baroque period. Even classical, the use of the harpsichord makes think that he was kind of attach for the passed musical stiles, more properly speaking that of his father, but indeed he was following the contemporary trends. Just notice that almost is abset the basso continuo as it was intended.

Aires Del Virreinato

When searching for mexican composers and mexican music, basically one will find music dated from the second half of the XIX century and from the XX century, but what about earlier music? Music that occupied the viceroyalty period was in many factors forgotten and manuscripts were lied hidden in cathedrals, libraries or personal collections. Few musicologist have found the touch of this kind of music, a music different from the european baroque, a music with special mexican taste. One just must listenen to Sumaya or Jerusalem y Stella or Juan Gutierrez de Padilla, etc.

This disc presents music of composers whose music was performed in the New Spain, and many of they were spaniards.

Enjoy the "cantadas" and human tones, a music style that was in vogue in the first hal of XVII century in Spain and in the New World.

Jaroussky - Carestini (The Story of a Castrato)

Many of the castrato arias with we have pleasure nowadays, were written in fact spatially for those super stars at that time. This cd contains one pasticcio of arias composed for Carestini (Farinelli's main rival) by the some of the most renown composers of that time. The era of the castrati have finished and no one really know how it was the voice of such singers even though exist  a recording dated from 1902 of Alessandro Moreschi the last castrato, but I cant rely on the quality of the registration because sounds like a rat crying, so, better enjoy the natural countertenors and thrust in their approach to a real castrato voice.
