Oboensonaten (Oboe Sonatas) - Fasch

“The works of Johann Friedrich Fasch were long denied a place in the repertory even though the noted scholar Hugo Riemann drew attention to this composer more than 90 years ago, paying tribute to his role as a precursor of the classical school and describing his idiom as crucial for the emergence of the new style, an assessment subsequently shared by other musicologists in what were often important contributions to research. As all his compositions have come down to us in manuscript form, much remains to be rescued from obivlion, but the small sample of his output that the cognoscenti and the wider musical public have been able to hear in recent years was impressive enough to confirm Riemann’s statement, “Henceforth he (Fasch) will have to be regarded as one of J. S. Bach’s most eminent contemporaries…””
