Vespro della Beata Vergine - (Mazzocchi, Carissimi, Frescobaldi, Palestrina)

Vespro della beata Vergine (Vespers for the blessed virgin) is a composition based on several biblical text used to pray to the virgin Mary. To this set, were selected five psalms, a magnificat and some antiphones in between from three masters of the early baroque and one from the late renaissance.

Palestrina's most important contribution to music was the setting of the canons regarding sacred music. His influence persisted by many time among the composers of the next generation: Monteverdi, Frecobaldi, Carissimi, just to name some. These ulter composers fullfilled with mastery the conciliation between the antique and modern styles.
